What’s the Magic Hiding in YOUR Camera Roll?

We tend to think the moments worth preserving are the big ones.

Weddings. Birthdays. Graduations. Anniversaries. Vacations. Milestones.

The moments when everyone knows to pull out a camera. But lately, I’ve been thinking about the other ones.  The wonderfully ordinary ones.  The photographs that might not mean much to anyone else — but make you laugh the second you see them because you know the story.  Like Jordy.

My friend took her dog, Jordy, for a walk.

Nothing particularly remarkable about that.

Except Jordy apparently believed he was embarking on a journey of epic proportions.

There he was, waddling down the path with his little hobo-style provisions tied to a stick, looking like he was leaving civilization forever.

Of course, because Jordy was named after a Green Bay Packer, his provisions needed a little green and gold. 😂 Then came the look back. You know the one.

Are you people coming?

And suddenly, this perfectly ordinary dog walk wasn't just a dog walk anymore.

It was The Great Wilderness Exodus.

There were provisions. There was drama. There was a mournful soundtrack playing somewhere in my imagination. There was a courageous journey into the unknown.

And I believe the expedition lasted approximately 40 feet. 😂 That’s the story.

And that's exactly what fascinates me about the photographs sitting in our phones.

The Best Photograph Isn't Always the Best Story

We have thousands of pictures. We take them constantly.

And when we think about which ones are “special,” we naturally gravitate toward the beautiful ones.

§  The perfectly posed family picture.

§  The gorgeous vacation sunset.

§  The professional wedding photograph.

And yes, those photographs matter.

But sometimes the picture that holds the most magic isn't particularly beautiful at all.

It might even be blurry.  Or badly cropped.  Or completely ridiculous.

Because the photograph isn't what makes it valuable.

It’s the story behind it that makes it valuable.

§  The personality.

§  The inside joke.

§  The ridiculous thing that happened five minutes before.

§  The detail only your family would understand.

§  The thing that created a new tradition or nickname.

§  The moment somebody still brings up years later and everyone immediately starts laughing.

Those are the stories we keep telling.

And I started wondering:

What if we could actually see them?

Start scrolling. But don't look for your best photograph.

Look for the one that makes you stop.

The one that makes you smile before you've even explained why.

The one that makes you think:

Oh my gosh. Remember this?

§  Maybe it's your dog.

§  Maybe it's something that happened on vacation.

§  Maybe it's a photograph of your parents that carries a story nobody else would recognize.

§  Maybe it's your best friend doing something completely ridiculous.

§  Maybe it's the moment before the big moment.

§  Or the moment after.

§  Maybe nothing “important” happened at all.

§  Maybe it was just Tuesday.

Wonderfully ordinary.

§  And somehow unforgettable.

§  That might be your Magic Moment™.
